The pictures in this book are of people, places, and animals I met on my visits to Wisconsin between 2014 and 2022. They are mostly from Black River Falls, Hixton, Merrillan, Humbird, and Alma Center.
My connection to Wisconsin began as an imaginary one, sparked by Wisconsin Death Trip, a book by Michael Lesy, that somehow landed in my lap when I was a child growing up in Buenos Aires.
I remember understanding that everyone in that book was long gone, and then apprehensively asking my Mom if I too was going to die. It was the first time my nine-year-old mind understood that many more people had come before me, and I never would have been able to look in their eyes if not for those photographs.
Dread and wonder became one.
It didn’t take long to realize that no matter how intensely I studied their faces, their bodies, and the spaces they occupied, I’d never know them; so I brought them to life with my imagination, the same way I’ve done since. Soon after this, I started photographing everything and everyone in my life, to keep all of us from disappearing.
