in-ter-play is a weekend of free screenings, performance, and conversation presented by MACK and SPBH Editions in collaboration with Reference Point. Taking place within the library, bookshop, and bar space of Reference Point, the programme brings together events from esteemed artists and writers, including Teju Cole, Carmen Winant, Lindokuhle Sobekwa, Charlie Engman, and Philippa Snow.
This selection of artists and writers will provide a myriad of entry points into their work through a series of events spanning film screenings, workshops, performance, and conversation. These events prompt critical dialogue, provide inspiration for creative practice, and explore the potential for close interactions between visual image, text, and audio.
The weekend will include a pop-up shop showcasing new and favourite books from MACK and SPBH Editions. When the artist is present, book signings will take place in the library after each event.

19:00 Teju Cole: ‘Capacitor’
A screening of Capacitor, an original video work by Teju Cole. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the artist about its connection to his latest book, Pharmakon, plus a book signing.
Saturday 18 May
12:00 – 15:00 Carmen Winant: ‘How To Take Pictures of Abortion’
This twenty-minute video operates as research, explanation, and inquiry for artist Carmen Winant, who made it as she worked on her latest book The Last Safe Abortion. The video will be played on a loop, accompanied by a curated reading room of materials on abortion care. Please note the artist will not be present.
14:00 – 16:00 Philippa Snow: ‘LXHXN’
A screening of Garry Sykes’s feature film LXHXN, a found-footage biopic of Lindsay Lohan, constructed from over fifty hours of home movies, live appearances, talk show interviews, news stories, and infrared surveillance. Curated by Philippa Snow in response to her latest book Trophy Lives.

An experimental performance exploring Lindokuhle Sobekwa’s new book I carry Her photo with Me, considering lived experiences and ancestral narratives within the wider socio-political fabric of contemporary South Africa.

What does it mean to practice publishing? What does the future of art publishing look like? This panel discussion examines publishing as a form of artistic practice within contemporary culture, touching on a range of experimental formats and modes of production, from artists’ books to self-publishing. With Louise Camu (Reference Press), Bruno Ceschel (SPBH Editions), Hasti Crowther (Montez Press), Michael Mack (MACK) and Rose Nordin (OOMK).
15:30 – 16:30 Charlie Engman: ‘Made from Memory’
A workshop led by renowned photographer and artist Charlie Engman that explores how the audience can navigate the chaotic pursuit of visibility and connection in the digital age.
17:00 – 18:30 Mahalia Taje Giotto: ‘unapologetically sorry’
Mahalia Taje Giotto speaks to curator Zorian Clayton about their artist’s book existential boner, an exploration of the body, gender identity, sexuality, desires, and physical transformation.
18:30 – 20:00 Joseph Desler Costa: 'Dream Date'
Joseph Desler Costa’s film Dream Date is a meditation on intimacy and connection, in which visual languages collide with disparate texts sourced from advertising, cinema, and the artist’s own writings. The screening will be followed by music by the artist and drinks.
