About A Civil Rights Journey

A Civil Rights Journey presents the astonishing archive of Dr Doris Derby: photographer, organiser, and teacher, active throughout the Civil Rights Movements of the mid-twentieth century in the Southern United States. An anthropologist by training, Derby photographed the human face of an everyday struggle for survival and liberty. This extensive volume documents the routines, joys, and sorrows of day-to-day African American life among such pivotal events as the Jackson State University shooting, the funeral of Martin Luther King Jr., and the 1968 Democratic Convention.
